My Background

My name is Frederick Maitland, and I thought it might be useful to tell you a little about my background, so that you can decide if you’d like to get in touch.

I founded Stoneriver Therapy in 2006 when I returned to the UK after six years living, studying and working in California.  I ran a busy practice in central London for ten years, until May 2016 when I returned to my native Scotland with my wife. Whilst in the United States, I qualified as a Craniosacral Therapist and a Chiropractor.  In the UK I am registered with the Craniosacral Therapy Association and have also worked for them in variety of roles, most recently as a member of their Council.

I've been inspired by my own experience of Craniosacral Therapy, which was significant in enabling me to heal from a bad back which had bothered me for many years, and because I came to understand it was hugely beneficial in helping others with their health and well being.  This has been the case with the other approaches I have studied too - my decisions have always been based on my own experience as a client, and on recognising the benefits others have gained.

Having always had a natural spiritual inclination, I have travelled, studied and worked extensively with Native American, Shamanic, Tibetan and Buddhist teachers, healers and practitioners.  One of the most inspiring experiences I've had was to spend 3 months living with a native community at Indian Canyon in California, where I came to understand and honour my gifts as a healer.  Sadly ancient wisdom has largely been lost in the West, yet so much can be gained from it and I have thrived as a result of my indigenous experiences.  They inform how I live my life on a day to day basis, and have enabled me to help many people live more purposeful and fulfilled lives.  I have never felt limited to a particular belief or philosophical system.  Instead I have developed my own unique way of working, based upon a common ground of values and ethics, a reverence for all life, nature, and what I call the great mystery - basically the consideration that we are part of something so much bigger than most of us understand.

My experiences have led me to believe that our tendency to divide ourselves, and our healing, into separate parts is not helpful.  We often think of our minds, emotions, bodies, souls and spirits as separate - when in fact they are fully interconnected and should be respected as such and treated holistically.  This belief led me to train more recently in Integrative Psychosynthesis Counselling.  As part of my training I spent three years working at St Joseph's Hospice in East London, and am registered with the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy.

All of this has enabled me to evolve Stoneriver Therapy into what it is today - a holistic healthcare practice, offering a unique and dynamic approach to health and wellbeing which integrates thoughts, feelings, body and soul.

Lastly, I recognise the importance of physical health and of living an embodied active life.  I particularly enjoy and draw inspiration from time spent in nature, here in East Lothian, around Scotland and further afield too - often with our lovely dog, Barley.
